The Henry Desmond Series
These six collages are comprised of photos taken by (and of) Sgt. Patrick Henry Desmond of the 470th Quartermaster Platoon in 1944 and 1945 throughout Europe. Sergeant Desmond was a friend of my maternal grandparents and regularly sent postcards, letters, and photographs to them during the war. In some cases, I augmented the collages with historical images, such as the visual reference to the statue of Marcus Aurelius being prepared to be packed up for safety in They Tried to Save the Art, and the interior jeep images in Beer on the Beach. Henry Desmond returned safely from the war and lived a full life until his death in the early 1990s.
